SUBALTERN INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISM
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Subaltern International Journalism Award
Over the past two decades, Indian media, largely influenced by corporate interests, has transitioned into a tool serving the ruling class and corporate entities, resembling a form of modern-day servitude. Instead of addressing critical issues such as poverty, food security, healthcare, employment, and social welfare, it has often prioritized sensationalism and fanatic religious narratives.
With the rise of digital and social media, the landscape has transformed significantly. These platforms have become potent instruments for disseminating information, whether serving the masses or catering to the elite. However, there's a clear imbalance in power and control, with certain segments of society monopolizing the means and channels of communication.
Amidst this proliferation of biased media, there's been a noteworthy emergence of subaltern media—representing the marginalized and suppressed classes. While not as influential as their corporate-backed counterparts, they have managed to carve a niche for themselves, dispelling ignorance and challenging misleading narratives.
Globally, subaltern media has played a pivotal role in shaping political and social movements. In India, despite facing resource constraints, individuals from suppressed classes have been instrumental in driving significant changes across various spheres of life.
To honor the resilience and contributions of these unsung heroes, an award has been instituted by Surender Kumar, the Editor-in-Chief, with the backing of the subaltern journalist communities. This award seeks to celebrate and recognize those who have tirelessly worked towards positive transformations within Indian society.
